We’ve all been there. A new project comes up and the ideas just aren’t flowing, you’re stuck staring at a blank page unable to find any kind of starting point. What do you do? Where do you go? We’ve got a few ideas that may help get those creative juices flowing again.
First things first. Get up and go outside. Take a breath of fresh air, go for a walk, take a quick bike ride, maybe a small hike. Sometimes physically removing yourself from the situation can help your brain get that much needed reset. A common cause for creative block is fatigue. Going outside can help your brain get that much needed mental rest.
Try doing something you haven’t done before. Use colors you often avoid, try a different technique. Use this opportunity to try out that new tool or idea you’ve been waiting on. It doesn’t have to be perfect, or even the right choice. Try using a different medium such as paint, markers, or pencils. Anything that is different and forces your mind to think about the task differently can be a great help.
It can take more than one person to find a solution. Go to your team members, other creatives, and ask about their thoughts. Their ideas can often spark some of your own and the collaboration could be the cause of a wonderful new and creative idea.
There is no shame in finding yourself stuck. It’s okay to walk away from a project for a while and do something else. Working on another project in which the ideas have already been created can often jump start something new. Don’t feel discouraged if nothing comes immediately. Everything great often takes time.
It doesn’t have to be great, it doesn’t even have to be good, it just needs to start. Don’t wait for the perfect inspiration, or the right time to work on it. The best artists in the world struggle with creators' block just like you and each has their own way around it. Find what works best for you, and sometimes that may just be as simple as starting the work. Dive right in and see where it takes you. You may find yourself totally surprised by what you can do.
Just start with something and before you know it, you’ll have created a brand new piece of art that is all your own.
Most of all, it’s important to be patient with yourself. Everyone struggles with the occasional ability to create. Be kind to yourself and understand that it’s okay to take a break and start again tomorrow.
