5 Ways To Increase Engagement

Mckenzie Holder • July 15, 2020

Have you noticed a decline in your page views? Are visitors spending less time on your site? Wondering what you can do to find a solution? Look no further. We have compiled a list of tips to help you get your engagement up again. Whether you need to increase your internal linking or boost your page loading time, here are five tips on how to increase your engagement.

1 Boost Internal Linking

Internal linking is a great way to help new viewers stay on your website as well as navigate to less easily accessible pages. In this way, you can generate a high page view rate and decrease the bounce rate.

When you apply internal linking, it should be specific and relevant to the topic it is linking from. If you have built up your content enough to have a pillar page (often seen as “the ultimate guide”) and smaller pages in relation to it, it is best to have the pillar page link to your smaller topics and the smaller topic back to your pillar. The more connected you can be, the greater your chances of a higher engagement increase.

Make sure your links go somewhere new, such as pages not easily accessible from the home page. This can help viewers come to areas of the sight that may hold even more relevant information for them and assist them further.

2 Find Your Writing Style

Discovering your unique way of writing can help set you apart and clue newcomers into your personal style. Depending on how you write, fun and quippy or professional and serious can show people the type of business you are.

Find your writing style and the best way to display what kind of tone you would like to portray. Once you decided on your writing style, stick to it.

Having a consistent tone can help you build up trust with your audience. Find the tone to fit your product. If you’re are a business-related business, a more formal tone could best suit your needs. If you’re more of a fun information site like Buzzfeed, quirkiness can play to your strengths.

3 Know Your Audience

Seeing your engagement decrease is never fun. Take the time to see what your audience enjoys most and why they like it. Research the kind of questions your audience is often asking. What kind of solutions are they looking for?

Take time to look at your old content and see if it is still accurate and up to date. You may need to update your information to better fit the needs of your audience in order to offer the best solution.

Study how people interact with your site. Are there areas where they get confused? Are there roadblocks making their navigation difficult? Once you find these problem areas, find the best way to work with your audience to make the experience more user friendly.

Talk to your audience. Live chats can help you find the areas where people are having issues. If they can’t find what they’re looking for, often they will let you know. Together you can create the best solution.

Once you understand the information your audience is in need of, you can better optimize your content creation to match their needs.

4 Add A Search Box

Have you ever visited a website and struggled to find what you were looking for? It can be even harder with no definitive search box. Your viewers can get frustrated if what they need is not easily accessible. They may leave your site in search of quicker and easier options.

Help your audience find exactly what they need by adding a search box to your site. Make it easy to find and highly visible but keep it simple. Sometimes your audience knows exactly what they need and a quick simple search can get them there faster.

Adding auto-suggestions to your search bar can also increase engagement by letting them know what other similar topics you have they may be interested in.

5 Reduce Page Load Time

Ever experience a slow loading page? Most people don’t have the patience and often leave for a faster site. Take a look at your site and see how fast your pages are loading. If they’re running a little slow, it’s time to upgrade to better loading times.

Do your best to get your load time to one to two seconds. Any longer and 40% of visitors might leave your site if the page doesn’t load within a three-second margin. The faster your load time, the higher your engagement can be.
